A Dark Place
A Dark Place

Description:
Using a single piece of background fabric, 5 shapes were hand drawn and then cut out. Improv pieced fabric was then pieced back into those cut out areas. The color scheme is somber and dark, the quilting is simple with subtle color shifts for texture and movement. The binding is both quilted and improv pieced. The area of improv piecing correlates with an opening in the design. It stands solitary in keeping with the heaviness of the composition. The design (which also includes the quilt back) reflects the destruction of fires, the darkening of the air by smoke and the overlying societal unrest around the pandemic and racial injustice.
