Description:
Sea Star Soliloquy is a fully hand-pieced quilt, using the English Paper Piecing technique, that evolved to include over 7,000 pieces. The centre piece of the quilt was my first experience of EPP and a sense of wonder at the kaleidoscopic patterns that can be created using this technique encouraged me to continue stitching. As the quilt developed, my daughter observed that the shapes looked like starfish in rock pools and from there the inspiration for a sea-themed quilt flourished. The blue sea background is also completely hand-stitched using the same shapes as the coloured pieces to mirror the patterns in the quilt and provide texture. The modern curves quilting pattern used by Monika McKinlay, of Make IT Quilted, to give the impression of ocean waves further enhanced the sea theme. Monika also added shell patterns and highlighted some stars with starfish patterns using four layers of Glide60 thread to give the sea creatures definition.
